Don’t Let Your Imagination Be Trapped Inside the Broken System
What if our greatest challenge isn’t conflict or exceptionally challenging behavior of your fellow species? What if it’s our imagination?
When a community struggles, a team fractures, or relationships become painful, most of us instinctively ask:
“How do we fix this?”
Sometimes that is exactly the right question. But sometimes the system has become so shaped by fear, blame, or old patterns that all of our imagination stays trapped inside it. We spend our energy trying to repair what no longer has the conditions to become healthy.
What if there is another possibility?
Not giving up. Not walking away. Not pretending the pain doesn’t matter. But cultivating a living alternative. An alternative where people practice listening before fixing. Where curiosity matters more than certainty. Where conflict is not treated as proof that community has failed, but as evidence that our lives are intertwined and our relationships matter.
Communities don’t become resilient because they avoid conflict.
They become resilient because they learn how to stay connected through it.
That kind of culture doesn’t appear by accident. It grows through everyday practices of presence, reflection, mutual support, and learning together. It grows when we create spaces where people can remain human with one another, even when they disagree. This is the heart of what I call conflict tending.
Conflict tending isn’t about winning an argument or convincing people to see things our way. It is about cultivating the conditions where understanding, responsibility, creativity, and relationship can emerge. Sometimes those conditions help repair existing relationships. Sometimes they inspire entirely new ways of living and working together.
If you’re involved in intentional communities, permaculture, neighborhood resilience, cooperative projects, or any group trying to create a more connected future, these questions matter.
- How do we create communities that are not only sustainable, but relationally sustainable?
- How do we cultivate cultures where conflict becomes a source of learning rather than division?
- How do we become the kind of people who can remain connected when life becomes difficult?
These are the questions I’m exploring through the Conflict-Tending Group. If those questions resonate with you, I’d love to have you join us. Whether you’re living in community, helping lead one, or simply longing for healthier ways of being together, you’re welcome.
Because perhaps the most transformative thing we can do isn’t to spend all our energy repairing a broken system. Perhaps it’s to cultivate a living alternative. One where people can see another way of being together…
…and become curious enough to cross over.
